Kinks frontman Ray Davies: 'We booked The Rolling Stones for £50' at an art school gig
Kinks frontman Ray Davies has told ITV News that he once booked The Rolling Stones for £50 for an art school gig.
Promoting The Sunny Afternoon, a musical looking back atthe Kinks and their rise to fame, Davies said that big names used to play at the venue where he was being interviewed - Hornsey Town hall in north London.
He told ITV News, the songs chosen for the show are woven into the script line from across the Kinks' discography.
"It's interesting that the music involved in our show spans quite a lot of our career," Ray pointed out.
"But it fits. It's not just thrown in there. Like just throw in a pop song. It is part of the storyline. I'm very pleased with it."
The 70-year-old songwriter has become the toast of the West End, and was recently dubbed a London Legend, and is admired across the generations.
But he reckons young people have always sought out music beyond their years.
But he's happy to see music lovers looking backwards as well as forward.
The Kinks were banned for four years from America, Davies recalls:
And he even hinted at a reunion at Horsey town hall.
"It would be for the community," Davies said.
