No special treatment for 'sausage' princes William and Harry

Princes William and Harry are used to the royal treatment - but they found themselves being called something they perhaps hadn't before during a recent appearance on DIY SOS.

The BBC show's resident electrician Billy Byrne referred to them in his usual way - 'sausage'.

This prompted Harry to quip: "If you're going to call me sausage, it's going to be a very long day."

The brothers donned hardhats to help turn a derelict street into homes for ex-service personnel in Manchester.

The down-to-earth pair had already asked to be called by their names rather than "Your Royal Highness".

Presenter Nick Knowles revealed the exchange in an interview with Radio Times magazine.

He said: "Having met them before, I was aware they don't particularly want to be walking round a building site and being called 'Your Royal Highness'.

"They told me 'You can call us William and Harry.' So everybody was quite happy to call them that.

"Apart from our electrician Billy, who called them 'sausage'. But then he calls everybody sausage."

Byrne, who learnt his trade as an electrician in the 1960s, is one of the original members of the DIY SOS squad and known as the 'team clown'.
