Yogi Berra: American baseball legend who inspired Yogi Bear cartoon character dies aged 90
Yogi Berra, the American baseball star who was believed to have inspired the cartoon character Yogi Bear, has died aged 90.
Berra played for the New York Yankees for the majority of his 19-year career.
He was a 13-time World Series champion and was named the Most Valuable Player title on three occasions.
Berra died of natural causes at his home in New Jersey on Tuesday night, Dave Kaplan, the director of the Yogi Berra Museum, said.
The Yankees tweeted: "We have lost an icon."
Major League Baseball said the world of baseball was in "deep mourning", saying his death had "created a void that cannot be filled".
He was also known for his famous quotations, such as "It ain't over 'til it's over" and "When you come to a fork in the road take it", which became known as his "Yogi-isms".
In a statement released through the museum that was dedicated to celebrating his life, Berra's family said:
