British ventriloquist wins America's Got Talent

A British ventriloquist has won this year's America's Got Talent.

Paul Zerdin, who was already a successful performer in the UK, said he was "speechless" and "totally bowled over".

He wins $1 million (£645,00) and the chance to headline his own Las Vegas show.

Previous winner Terry Fator, a ventriloquist act who won the show in 2007, went on to have a Vegas residency worth a reported $100 million (£64 million).

Zerdin, 43, from London, won ITV's The Big, Big Talent Show in 1996 and has performed at the Royal Variety Show three times.

The ventriloquist also appeared in several children's programmes including the BBC's Tricky Business and presented Rise and Shine for GMTV.

Zerdin, who uses puppets Sam, grandpa and baby in his act, was the early favourite to win the show.

Former Spice Girl Mel B, who is a judge, told him: "You're flawless."
