The woman who was being interviewed live on-air when a gunman shot and killed two TV journalists in Virginia has been released from hospital today.

Vicki Gardner was shot in the back during the incident on 26 August in front of 40,000 television viewers.

The gunman, Vester Flanagan, ambushed a WDBJ-TV cameraman Adam Ward and reporter Alison Parker during the interview at the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Centre. Both died of gunshot wounds.

Flanagan subsequently shot himself after a police chase.

Tim Gardner, the victim's husband, has said doctors removed one of her kidneys and some of her colon and she has spent two weeks recuperating in hospital.

The gunman was a disgruntled former employee of the television network who was fired in 2013 for poor performance and conflicts with co-workers, who said he was always claiming to be the victim.

Mr Gardner said the first four shots were aimed at the journalists before the Flanagan attempted to shoot Ms Gardner. The first two missed but the third caught her in the back.

On a Facebook page set up for well wishers to track her recovery, a post appeared confirming news of her discharge from hospital.

Andy Parker, father of victim Alison Parker, has pledged a full-scale fight for tougher gun laws.
