£30,000 mark reached to pay for ex-Spurs and Chelsea star Jimmy Greaves' stroke treatment

Supporters of former England footballer Jimmy Greaves have passed a £30,000 target to fund treatment for him after he suffered a severe stroke in May.

By Sunday afternoon, more than £33,000 had been raised to help the 75-year-old.

Greaves, who played for Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham during his career, left hospital in June and the cash has been earmarked to pay for 500 hours of treatment.

The campaign to raise the money was set up online by the former striker's agent Terry Baker.

Tottenham have paid for part of his treatment and the Football Association has also made a contribution, understood to be a four-figure sum.

Before the total was reached, former England team-mate George Cohen questioned why the football world had not already rallied behind Greaves, who scored 44 goals in 57 England appearances.

He told the Sunday People: "It really is sheer madness that this money hasn't already been raised for Jimmy by people within the game.

"For one of the greatest players I've ever met to be left in this situation is very sad.

"Someone in football could easily give Jimmy the full £30,000 in one go. I'd do it immediately if I had the money."
