The Sun (£) newspaper quoted a "1D source" as saying the foursome would take some time apart to work on solo projects.
The report follows the departure of former fifth member Zayn Malik earlier this year.
A band spokesman has said he would not "comment on speculation".
Heartbroken fans have been bombarding social media with messages of outrage, devastation, and scepticism over the reports.
