Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in major cities in Brazil calling for the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.

Protesters joined midday marches on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach and in front of Congress in the capital Brasilia on Sunday in what is the third major demonstration against Ms Rousseff.

Despite the public gatherings, the response on social media has been tepid, suggesting the nationwide movement may not attract the millions of marchers its organisers claim.

The protesters blame Ms Rousseff for a vast corruption scandal and the economy's worst slump in a of a quarter century.

Less than a year into her tumultuous second term Ms Rousseff's support has dwindled to single digits in recent polls.

Polls also say two in three people support calls for her impeachment.

Support for the protest movement has been fueled by rising unemployment, inflation and the government's austerity measures.
