The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that it is investigating a number of criminal allegations involving the London charity Kids Company.

A statement released today said that the investigation is being led by officers from the Complex Case Team of the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.

Founder of Kids Company, Camila Batmanghelidjh, said she has been contacted by police but was not aware of the nature of the allegations.

A statement released by the charity said that it is co-operating fully with the investigation which is in relation to "historical but serious" allegations.

Earlier this month Kids Company said Camila Batmanghelidjh was moving to a new role within the charity as part of a shake-up which the organisation said was prompted by "unprecedented financial strain".

A shake-up had been pushed for by the Government, which was reported to have threatened to withhold a £3 million grant unless changes were made to the charity's management.

The Metropolitan Police has asked anyone who has information or concerns to contact the investigating team on 020 8217 6538, or the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000.
