The family of crash victim Lamara Bell have revealed that police tried to call her phone 10 days after she died.

The 25-year-old was critically injured in the crash off the M9 near Stirling on July 5. Ms Bell died in hospital a week later. Her 28-year-old partner John Yuill was found dead at the scene.

The crash was reported on the same day to Police Scotland by a member of the public. But the couple were left lying in the car for three days before police received a further call to the incident.

Ms Bell's brother described on Facebook how a senior officer visited the family today to apologise in advance after a voicemail message was left on her phone last week.

The call is believed to have been made on July 21 by an officer asking about the whereabouts of another family member.

Police have admitted they have "failed" the family.

The police investigations and review commissioner has begun an independent investigation into the case.
