Air turns blue at Wimbledon amid player outbursts
Foul-mouthed outbursts by a number of players turned the air blue on the first day of Wimbledon today.
Five-time champion Serena Williams was given a code violation for an "audible obscenity" during her first round win against Russian Margarita Gasparyan on Number One court.
Asked in her press conference if the incident was due to nerves, the US star replied: "Yeah I was really nervous," prompting laughter among reporters.
Australian star Nick Kyrgios appeared to say "dirty scum" during his straight sets victory after a fiery exchange with an umpire.
The 20-year-old later denied the insult was aimed at umpire Mohammed Layhani, claiming it was directed at himself.
Asked if he feared being fined, Kyrgios replied: "Wouldn't bother me."
Briton Liam Broady was also given a court violation for swearing as he battled through a five-set thriller against Australian Marinko Matosevic.
After the umpire's ruling, he was heard to say: "The guys who are the top three in the world don't get it on Centre Court."
