Lizzie Armitstead rushed to hospital following crash moments after she won first stage of Women's Tour

Armistead received oxygen from paramedics before being rushed to hospital.

Britain's female cyclist Lizzie Armitstead has been rushed to hospital following a crash moments after she won the first stage of the Women's Tour in Aldeburgh.

Armitstead, 26, lifted her arms to celebrate the victory but caught an onlooker as she attempted to place her hands on the bike again.

Paramedics treated the Boels-Dolmans rider before airlifting her to hospital. In her absence, Armitstead's team-mates collected the winning jersey on the podium on her behalf.

While the seriousness of the Commonwealth champion's injuries remain unknown, British cycling have tweeted:

"Best wishes to Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead who has won stage one @thewomenstour but has crashed after the finish line."
