ITV News investigation finds 1 in 5 Mental Health Trusts in England do not provide adequate 24-hour care
On a day when the CQC published a report into mental health care in the UK, an ITV News investigation using Freedom of Information requests has revealed that:
Twelve out of 50 Mental Health Trusts in England don’t provide adequate 24-hour support for people with mental health illnesses and 3/7 in Wales.
We showed responses to leading mental health campaigners - including Paul Farmer, the chief executive of charity Mind - who told us they have real concerns.
Dr Murray Morrison, West London NHS Mental Health Trust, said local authorities, the police and health workers should "work jointly" to ensure the patient is the focus.
The charity Mind said there are concerns over some of the 24-hour helplines that anyone can call if they are in crisis.
Lack of adequate 24-hour support can make a critical difference to someone suffering from mental illness who often reach out for help in crisis over night.
I look forward to the day I can report that mental health patients have achieved parity of care with people suffering with physical illness.
Alas, our FOI and today’s CQC report tells us we are not there yet.
The NHS Trusts failing to provide adequate 24-hour support are:
5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation
