The University of Cambridge is considering plans to appoint a "Lego professor", it has announced.

The Lego professorship of play in education, development and learning, to give the post its full title, will come with a research centre and £4m in donations from the Lego Foundation.

The offer from the foundation, which owns 25% of the famous toy firm, is currently "up for consideration" by the university's board, according to a Cambridge spokesperson.

A full announcement will be made in October.

The LEGO Foundation, which describes itself as a “corporate foundation” based in Denmark and Switzerland, says it was founded “to make children’s lives better – and communities stronger – by making sure the fundamental value of play is understood, embraced and acted upon”.
