Mr Sue-Patt, who was 50, was best known for his role in the iconic BBC show alongside Lee Macdonald, who played Zammo, and Erkan Mustafa, who starred as Roland.

He was the first character ever to be seen on the show as he walked through the fictional school gates in 1978.

Some of the actor's former Grange Hill colleagues paid tribute to him on Twitter:

A Scotland Yard spokesperson told ITV News: "Police were alerted at 12.42pm today to concerns for a man in Walthamstow.

"At 13.44pm, officers forced entry to a flat in Northcote Road and found the body of a man in his 50s inside the flat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed and at this early stage the death is not believed to be suspicious."
