Piers Morgan has blasted Andrew Strauss and branded him a "vindictive moron" after it was reported that the England and Wales Cricket Board's new director of cricket told Kevin Pietersen he has not earned a Test reprieve after 15 months in exile.

Pietersen fired a maiden unbeaten triple century in Surrey's LV= County Championship clash with Leicestershire at The Oval on Monday and then met with Strauss in the evening, where it is understood the 34-year-old was told his services are not required for England.

Strauss is expected to confirm on Tuesday that he has blocked a Test return for Pietersen at his first news conference at Lord's, causing outrage on Twitter.

Morgan, a friend of Surrey batsman Pietersen, tweeted: "Kevin Pietersen has been knifed in the back again, by a petty little man who's put personal animosity before England cricket.

"How can ECB chairman Colin Graves tell @KP24 the door is open if he gets county runs, then let Strauss slam it shut again?

"This is an absolute disgrace and I urge every England cricket fan to support @KP24.

"I can't remember a more insane situation than this in English sport. How can you tell a guy who's just scored 326* that he won't be picked??

"I've never seen @KP24 bat better than yesterday. Yet Strauss responds by banning him all over again? He's a vindictive moron & this is war.
