Judge slammed for saying murder victim Karen Buckley 'put herself in danger by drinking'

A judge has sparked outrage after saying young women put themselves in "vulnerable positions" by drinking too much - and compared them to murdered student Karen Buckley.

The comments of District Judge Nigel Cadbury, which he made a day after the 24-year-old's remains were found, have been widely reported in the media.

Sentencing a woman for punching another female outside a bar in Worcester, he said: "I find it incredible that young people can get so drunk that they don't even know who they're with.

"One only has to think about the horrible situation in Glasgow to see how serious this could have been.

"It's very, very worrying how young girls put themselves in such very vulnerable positions."

There is no suggestion Miss Buckley was drunk on the night she was killed. Alexander Pacteau, 21, has been charged with her murder.

Campaign groups have slammed the judge's remarks accusing him of laying the blame on the victim and making the perpetrators of such crimes "invisible".
