Former PM John Major warns of Labour-SNP 'mayhem'

Former Prime Minister Sir John Major has warned a minority Labour government propped up by SNP votes would be a "recipe for mayhem".

In a speech in the Midlands today, Sir John is expected to say it would lead to a "weak and unstable" administration which would wreck Britain's economic recovery.

Launching her manifesto earlier this week, SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon claimed the party would act in the interests of the whole of the UK, not just Scotland.

But Tory Sir John will say the SNP's "driving ambition" is an independent Scotland and it would inevitably use its position to demand policies that favour Scotland at the expense - "quite literally" - of the rest of the UK.
