Ferrari and Lamborghini wrecked in Beijing 'Fast and Furious' crash
Beijing police are investigating after two supercars were smashed beyond repair in a high speed crash just hours before the latest 'Fast and Furious' movie opened in the city on Saturday.
Photographs of the mangled remains of a lime-green Lamborghini, a damaged red Ferrari and other high-performance cars in a tunnel in the Chinese capital appeared online following Saturday's crash, which police said left one person injured.
Beijing police said that the two drivers had been detained. The driver of the Ferarri was a 20-year-old from Changchun, in Jilin, and the Lamborghini driver was a 21-year-old from Beijing.
Both were described as unemployed which prompted questions online.
"What are their names? Who are their fathers?" one user on the Weibo microblog site asked, according to AFP.
"Socialism is so good that it allows unemployed people to drive supercars," joked another.
The crash happened around 10pm in Saturday when the two cars entered the Datun Road Tunnel near the National Stadium, according to the China News Service, The Lamborghini, which had been trying to overtake, swerved to one side, ran over a guardrail and hit the tunnel wall, bringing down chunks of panelling from the walls.
The two cars were believed to racing at speeds of up to 160kmh (100mph) - the speed limit in the 1.2km tunnel is 60kmh (37mph) - and reports said that local residents have frequently complained to the police about drivers meeting to race through the tunnel but authorities have found it difficult to catch them.
