The BBC has given Jeremy Clarkson the all-clear to host quiz show Have I Got News For You, despite recently axing him from Top Gear.

Clarkson's contract was not renewed after the corporation investigated an incident in which he punched and verbally abused producer Oisin Tymon last month.

However, the presenter will record his appearance on Have I Got News For You - which he has hosted before - next month.

Jimmy Mulville, a founder of Hat Trick productions, which makes the show, last month said he thought Clarkson was a "fantastic broadcaster".

He joked to Broadcasting Press: "Maybe we will get the producer on so he can hit Jeremy Clarkson live on television."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "Jeremy's contract has not been renewed on Top Gear but he isn't banned from appearing on the BBC."
