Angelina Jolie has had her ovaries removed after doctors detected possible signs of cancer, the actress has revealed in a self-penned article for the New York Times.

Jolie, who had a double mastectomy in 2013, said this surgery was "less complex, but had more severe effects", disclosing that it put her into forced menopause.

She made the decision after a blood test uncovered signs of possible early cancer.

Jolie carries a gene that increases her chance of ovarian cancer by around 50 percent and said that three women in her family had died of cancer.

She had the procedure - a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy - last week, saying:
