Tomorrow the royal family will lead the nation in thanking those who served and those who suffered in Afghanistan.

Among the guests at St Paul's cathedral will be a 15-year- old boy who knows better than most that far from being over this conflict continues to exact a terrible price.

Brandon Campbell lost his father Sgt Steven Campbell in March 2010.

The family admit they are still struggling to come to terms with their loss.

As part of our battle goes on coverage ITV News spent the day at the Campbell family home near Newcastle and met up again with Brandon, who we first met as an 11-year-old bravely trying to come to terms with his Dad's death.

Brandon is now 15 and has had to grow up fast.

In a remarkable interview he told me the most important thing in his life now was keeping the promise he made his Dad in their last conversation.

"It was just before he left for the last time. He said if anything happened to him I must look after my Mam and make sure she is alright."

Brandon says he does everything he can to keep that promise and make his Dad proud.

"Mam really struggles, particularly at birthdays and special times. I hug her when she is crying and try to help."

Brandon's story is another insight into the lives of those who will never be able to put the war in Afghanistan behind them.

A brave boy whose dad would be so proud.
