A woman who broke down in tears when she heard for the first time in 39 years has said the most beautiful sound in the world is a baby's laugh.

One year ago Joanne Milne's mother filmed the moment her cochlear implants were turned on, changing her life forever.

Milne, who is from Gateshead, told ITV's Loose Women: "It wasn't just the words [I heard], I could hear life, I could hear the world around me.

"I could hear people talking, I could hear people walking around, it wasn't just the words."

A year on from the procedure, Milne said, "There's nothing nicer than hearing a newborn baby ... that laugh ... that's probably one of my favourite sounds."

"I do wish that I had it done years ago," she added, praising the doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
