Miliband calls on Cameron to clamp down on MPs' second jobs
Ed Miliband has called on David Cameron to ban MPs from holding lucrative second jobs that could lead to conflicts of interest.
The Labour leader today wrote to the Prime Minister asking for MPs to be prevented from holding paid directorships and consultancies.
Miliband also floated proposals for a cap on MPs' earnings outside their Westminster salaries, saying the measures would be part of Labour's election manifesto.
Miliband wrote: "The low levels of trust in politics demands clarity and I urge you to follow my lead in banning paid directorships and consultancies. There have been too many scandals about conflicts of interest in recent years."
Labour said 91 Tory MPs hold second jobs, amounting almost one in three Tory MPs, in contrast to 21 Labour MPs.
The party said it was looking at an earnings cap system similar to one that exists for members of the US Congress.
