ITV News has walked away with a number of prestigious gongs at this year's glittering Royal Television Society Awards.

The News at Ten programme was handed the coveted Daily News Programme of the Year prize, with judges describing the entry as "extraordinarily strong".

Meanwhile, presenter Mark Austin was named Network Presenter of the Year, recognised in particular for being a "brilliant presenter from location", getting involved in reporting as well as delivering the news.

His stint anchoring from the Middle East helped secure his title for the second year running.

ITV News' strong offerings both at home and internationally also came out top.

A report on the threat of jihadi terror attacks within our borders won News Coverage – Home, while James Mates' reporting from Ukraine helped secure another win in the News Coverage - International category.

Rounding off a triumphant night for the team, a familiar face for many ITV News viewers, Lawrence McGinty was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40-plus years as a science journalist.

Judges said they admired his ability to tell complex stories in an engaging and informative manner.

Elsewhere in the ITN family, Dispatches - Children on the Frontline, created by ITN Productions for Channel 4, won the International Current Affairs category, and Channel 4 News' Matt Frei was named Television Journalist of the Year.

And there was a moment of celebration for the broadcast industry as a whole when jailed Al Jazeera Journalists Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were named as winners of this year's Judges’ Award.

While his colleagues are still on bail in Egypt, Greste was there to collect the award, and told the audience he was "truly humbled" to receive it, and urged everybody in the industry to stand up for freedom of the press.

He echoed the sentiments again after the ceremony.
