Sub-zero conditions in the north-east United States have brought the normally thundering Niagara Falls to a stand still.

Parts of the surface of the famous waterfall on the Canadian border have frozen over leaving what is normally a roaring river looking silent and serine.

Records were broken when the lowest temperature since 1936 was recorded in Chicago, coming in at -22 degrees Celsius, National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Oravec said.

The US National Weather Service forecast the "historic" and "dangerously cold" weather to continue across much of the eastern US.
