The Telegraph has dismissed claims of bias in its reporting of stories surrounding leading British bank HSBC as "astonishing and unfounded".

The newspaper was responding to accusations from its former chief political commentator Peter Oborne that its coverage of HSBC was "a fraud on its readers".

Mr Oborne said he felt compelled to resign from the paper because of its stance over HSBC.

In his resignation announcement Mr Oborne outlined his concerns about how the paper treats critical reports on HSBC which he claimed were "soft" and "influenced by advertising."
