Investigators have been called to the trust responsible for the famous high-security Broadmoor Hospital amid concerns of overspending and fraud.

West London Mental Health Trust said it had called for an independent probe because it has "an overriding duty to spend taxpayer money on priorities that make a difference to patient care."

The mental health trust in charge of the Berkshire facility, which treats around 200 of the most violent men in the country, has overspent by £4 million, according to a report in The Independent .

Broadmoor has been heavily linked to the Jimmy Savile scandal and was at the centre of a high-profile tribunal last year, when an NHS whistleblower claimed she was bullied by her bosses when she made allegations about poor patient care and staff welfare.
