North East coast commemorates German bombardment 100 years on
Commemorations are taking place in Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby 100 years after the North East coast was devastated by the German bombardment during the First World War.
A full day of remembrance and tributes are being paid to those who died in after German warships fired almost 800 high explosive shells at 7.55am on December 16, 1914.
ITV News Correspondent Damon Green reports from Scarborough:
A total of 137 civilians and military personnel were killed and more than 500 were wounded in the attack that caused widespread fear and shock.
During the attack Durham Light Infantry soldier Theo Jones became the first British soldier to be killed by enemy action on home ground during the war.
