Video shows moment a rugby player with Down's Syndrome scores winning try
A video uploaded to the internet shows the winning try in a rugby game between two secondary school teams in North Wales.
On the face of it, this is a normal game with team mates celebrating their victory, but in one respect it is highly unusual: The player who scores the try, named Ethan, has Down's Syndrome.
“It’s not often you see players with Down’s syndrome getting the opportunity to take centre-stage in a mainstream sporting occasion," a sports manager at the Down's Syndrome Association told ITV News.
Players on both teams apparently spoke to their teachers before the match about creating an opportunity for Ethan "to play a game he's always wanted to play".
An email from a teacher at Ysgol Brynhyfryd, included in the video, says Ethan's friends even helped him with his maths by "asking him to assist with the numbers on the back of the shirts before the game".
Down's Sydrome is a genetic condition that affects around one in every 1,000 babies born in the UK. While it does not prevent people from playing sport, it is unusual for them to compete against peers who do not also have the condition.
Scott Pollington Woods, manager of the Down’s Syndrome Association's DS Active programme, says he has never seen anything like it.
"It’s fantastic to see players from both teams not only including him [Ethan] but allowing him to shine,” he said.
"People with Down’s Syndrome, as a result of the condition, often find it difficult to participate in mainstream and even PAN disability sports.
"DSActive, a DS specific sports programme, was created to give people with the condition the chance to take part and flourish in an environment that is both comfortable yet competitive."
Marc Roberts, North Wales performance and development manager for the Welsh Rugby Union, told ITV News he decided to make and upload the video because he felt it demonstrated the "values for our rugby culture".
Part of the reason why it is uncommon to see people with Down's Syndrome playing full contact sports is because of a neck condition called atlantoaxial subluxation.
While this condition can affect anyone, it is more prevalent in people with Down's Syndrome.
Ethan has now been selected to be the mascot for the next Rygbi Gogledd Cymru home game on 20th December. He will get to walk onto the pitch with the players and meet them after the game.
