The senior police officer who is stepping aside as head of the Madeleine McCann investigation today declined to comment when I asked how he feels about leaving the role.

DCI Andy Redwood is in Portugal this week to take part in questioning of 11 witnesses in relation to Madeleine's disappearance.

It will probably be the last time he visits Portugal before stepping down as the head of Operation Grande on December 22 after three years at the helm.

His replacement is another experienced detective, Nicola Wall.

Wall may bring fresh focus to the case and help the team move a step closer to a much-needed breakthrough.
