Wigan owner Dave Whelan apologises for 'anti-semitic' comment in Jewish Telegraph
Wigan owner Dave Whelan has used the Jewish Telegraph to apologise for comments he made that prompted claims of anti-semitism.
“I apologise profusely to anyone who has taken offence because I would never offend the Jewish community under any circumstances," he said.
Whelan was charged by the Football Association last month after claiming that "Jewish people do chase money," and has requested an extension to the deadline set for him to respond to the charge.
The 78 year-old made the remark in question while responding to critcism for appointing Malky Mackay.
The Scot remains under investigation himself for a string of alleged racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-semitic text messages while he was in charge of Cardiff City.
“There’s nobody could knock the Jewish community," Whelan told the Jewish Telegraph. "For them to accuse me of that, it hurts me a lot."
“Never have I made anti-Jewish comments. We have always, always respected what the Jewish people did, especially through the war."
