Migrant workers living in Southampton – one of the biggest Polish communities in Britain – have said they believe cutting benefits to people like them would be illegal.

It comes after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg became the latest leader to announce that he wants to see benefits curbed for migrants from the European Union.

Speaking today, he claimed the freedom to move across the EU is not the same as the freedom to claim benefits.

ITV News correspondent Martin Geissler spoke to some of the people such a policy could affect:

Among them is Margaret Kobialka, who moved to the UK last month with her husband and children.

Despite having a degree in psychology and two post graduate diplomas, she still has not found a job – and while her husband works full time, she said she would claim benefits as a last resort if she could not find work.

And Milo Pawlowski, who employs both Polish and British people at his salon, says he believes the Prime Minister will not be able to get the agreement of enough other countries in the EU to be able to cut benefits.

Southampton City Council leader Simon Letts said he believed attacking benefits was not the answer – more, new policy to restrict companies who bring the migrant workers in.
