Snow so thick 'you couldn't see your hand if you put it out'

The snow in New York State, which has claimed the lives of 13 people, fell so thick you "could not see your hand if you put it out the window," a local resident told ITV News.

Conditions are so bad some residents are trapped in supermarkets and have been forced to cook for each other as there is no way of getting home.

One man said his car outside was trapped under 10ft of snow.

Those that had to get somewhere took to skis and snowmobiles to get around.

While some enterprising New Yorkers made money by getting supplies such as bread and milk to those running short.
