Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane had to call police to the hotel where the team are staying ahead of a Euro 2016 qualifier after an 'incident', according to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

The FAI said Keane called gardai to the hotel in Portmarnock, County Dublin, after an incident involving a member of the public.

In a statement the association criticised "inaccurate media reports" about the event.

Earlier media coverage had suggested Keane was involved in an altercation with a fan who wanted him to sign a copy of his book.

A Gardai spokesman confirmed officers received reports of an incident at a hotel in north Dublin. An ambulance was also called to the scene but it is not clear whether anyone was assessed at the hotel or if they required treatment.

Ireland play Scotland in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Glasgow on Friday.
