Women who survived a botched mass sterilisation in India which left 12 others dead have told ITV News what they think went wrong.

One blamed post-op medication and the husband of another said it was the lack of hygiene of the doctor involved.

The women had been paid the equivalent of £14 to have what should have been a routine two-minute operation.

The wider aim was to curtail the size of India's fast-growing population.

Guidelines say only 30 operations should be carried out in one day but in this case 83 were done in six hours.

"I hope the doctor who has done this deed will never sleep in peace," said Sadhu, whose wife died following surgery.

"I started to feel very weak and tired," said Sumitra Yadev, a patient who became extremely ill but was saved. "I was so frightened."

Sumitra Yadev said she began vomiting and felt weak soon after the procedure.
