It was a night of celebrations for the US Republican party who now hold a majority in both houses of Congress for the first time since 2008.

"It's time to turn this country around," the new Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell told supporters in Kentucky.

The results make it incumbent on President Barack Obama to make compromises with his political opponents for his remaining two years in office.
