Former Manchester United stars Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes question Manchester City support
Former Manchester United stars Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have questioned Manchester City's support.
Ferdinand taunted City and their supporters after the club could not pack out the Etihad Stadium for the Champions League game against Roma.
Ferdinand, who left United in the summer after 12 years and is now at QPR, questioned why City would want to expand their home ground if they cannot fill it as it stands for important European games.
In June, City announced plans to take the stadium's total capacity to a little over 55,000, but there were plenty of empty seats for the visit of the Italians.
Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "How many empty seats are there at the city vs Roma game by the way....big CL game & fans would rather Ramsays Kitchen or something at home
"Expanding the stadium for what though?? For who though???"
Ferdinand's current club, QPR, have their own plans to move into a new 40,000 seater stadium, despite attracting less than 19,000 fans at Loftus Road.
Former United midfielder Scholes, meanwhile, doesn't believe City's supporters generate a good enough atmosphere for Champions League matches.
Speaking before yesterday's draw against Roma, he said:
"The club as a whole, the crowd need to really get behind this team. When you come here today, it just doesn’t have a European night feel about it. You go to Liverpool, you go to Old Trafford, you got Chelsea; they have a special feeling for it. The crowd, do they realise how lucky there are to be in this competition? I’m not sure they do."
