Environmental protesters reportedly left a trail of rubbish on the streets of New York after marching to get global leaders to act on climate change.

Several pictures were shared on social media after the march which appear to show overflowing rubbish bins and detritus left on the ground on the march route.

Organisers claim was joined by more than 310,000 people in the city.

There were 2,600 similar events in 156 countries, including London.

The day after the march the New York City Department of Sanitation tweeted to encourage locals to recycle.

Despite the pictures showing rubbish on the ground other pictures from the day appear to show recycling bins being misused or not used. There are recycling bins for paper, metal, glass and plastic along the route the marchers took.
