Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft has published findings from his own unofficial "exit poll" of 3,000 voters in the Scottish independence referendum.

Here are 10 of the "statistics" that emerged from his survey:

  • Older voters were the most opposed to independence, with 73% of over-65s voting No.

  • Independence was most popular among the youngest group of voters, with 71% of 16 and 17-years backing a breakaway.

  • One in seven people who voted SNP in the last election voted to remain in the UK.

  • Men were more likely to vote for independence, but overall men voted against a breakaway by a six-point margin.

  • Most Yes voters (52%) only decided to back independence since the start of the year, while most No voters (72%) made up their minds longer than a year ago.

  • For No voters, the pound was the most important factor in their decision, followed by pensions.

  • Yes voters cited the NHS and disaffection with Westminster politics as their main reasons for choosing independence.

  • Only 27% of No voters cited "a strong attachment to the UK" as their main reason for backing the union.

  • Only 10% of Yes voters said their main motivation was to ensure no more Conservative governments.

  • More than half of Yes voters think the indepence question will be revisited within the next decade.
