Grief-stricken grandfather is moved to tears by puppy gift in emotional video

A Belgium grandfather who recently lost his wife of 63 years was overwhelmed by emotion when his family gave him a puppy in a bid to ease his grief.

In the heart-warming video, Davy Vanhaesendonck explains that his grandfather, François Vermeir, lost "someone very special" after his grandmother's death following a brief illness.

To provide him with some company, Vanhaesendonck and his family gave the grieving 85-year-old a puppy - prompting emotional scenes.

François breaks down after his six-year-old granddaughter Lisa hands him the Yorkshire Terrier, named Snoopy.

"I can't believe it! Is it for me? Thank you darling," he says.

Mr Vermeir has described his new dog Snoopy as "very playful" and revealed that he has to keep an eye on him.

But he also paid tribute to his family who have helped him through his grief.

"I'm glad I have a new dog, but also such lovely children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Without them I might not have been here through the grief," he told Belgium news lindanieuws.
