British Gas: We will cut energy prices if we can

British Gas says its customers' average bills are falling.

British Gas' profits are down, but not its prices.

The chief executive of the group has told ITV News it will drop the cost of energy if it sees an opportunity to do so, especially given the tough financial landscape still facing many families.

In theory, companies are paying less for the gas and electricity they sell to us at the moment - and the regulator thinks the Big Six will be banking those savings rather than passing them on to customers.

British Gas, though, challenges that argument - saying its profits per customer will be less than half the £106 Ofgem claims.

Despite that, campaigners still say the market is "broken" - and are calling for energy companies to drop their prices urgently.
