A touching family photo showing Prince George with his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their pet dog Lupo is the latest in a line of public portraits of the young prince.

William and Kate have chosen to release the image ahead of their forthcoming tour to New Zealand and Australia which begins next month.

While his parents smile broadly, Prince George seems more interested in the family's black cocker spaniel as they gather at a window sill at Kensington Palace.

The photograph, taken by celebrity photographer Jason Bell, captured a relaxed image of the Cambridges during the photo session held a few weeks ago.

Bell, who is renowned for his images of Hollywood stars and rock and pop legends, took the picture and was also the official photographer for George's christening last October.

The family portrait is the latest public glimpse of the young prince since his birth last July:

The first public glimpse of Prince George came as William and Kate left St Mary's Hospital following his birth on July 22, 2013.
