Almost 30 years since Torvill and Dean took gold
It is almost 30 years to the day that Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean took gold at the Winter Olympics - and the milestone was marked on Dancing on Ice tonight.
Donning leg-warmers, neon costumes and dated hairdos, the competitors harked back to the 80s, as pop star Gareth Gates skated out of the competition after losing the skate-off to ex-soap actor Sam Attwater.
Torvill and Dean wowed the judges at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics on February 14 1984, achieving perfect scores for their performance of Bolero - and the duo showed off their gold medals on tonight's show.Dean said the pair are travelling to Sarajevo - the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina - on Wednesday, having been invited to perform the dance that earned them their place in Olympic history.
Pop Idol runner-up Gates, and his partner Brianne Delcourt, skated for survival in the ITV show, but Attwater and his partner Vicky Ogden won the skate-off unanimously.Gates was told by the judging panel that he was "the underdog" but that every week he "kept stepping it up".
Judge Jason Gardiner said:
Gates is currently starring in The Big Reunion on ITV2 where he is part of a band called 5th Story with fellow solo singers Dane Bowers, Kenzie, Kavana, and Adam Rickitt.
Topping the leader board tonight was competition favourite Ray Quinn with a score of 39.5, followed by actress Hayley Tamaddon on 36.5, gymnast Beth Tweddle on 34.5, former England rugby star Kyran Bracken on 33, singer Suzanne Shaw on 32.5, Attwater on 31.5 and Gates on 29. This is the last series of Dancing on Ice.
