A real-life castaway has survived being stranded on a propeller-less boat in the Pacific Ocean for 16 months on a diet of hand caught birds and turtles.

In a story that rivals the book and movie the Life of Pi, the man who was found on a deserted, remote Pacific island claimed to have been drifting for 16 months after setting out from Mexico, more than 8,000 miles (12,500 km) away.

He was found emaciated with long hair and a beard, by two islanders who spotted a small fibreglass boat washed up on a remote Pacific atoll, according to the Guardian.
