North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has become a father to a baby daughter, according to US basketball star Dennis Rodman.

Following his second trip to the secretive state this year, Rodman told The Guardian the North Korean leader is a "good dad" to his daughter named Ju-ae.

Kim's wife Ri Sol had appeared to be pregnant in pictures issued last year by North Korea's state news agency, although no confirmation was made at the time. She then disappeared from public view, returning last October.

Speaking to the Guardian, Rodman said: "The Marshal Kim and I had a relaxing time by the sea with his family. We shared many meals and drinks where we discussed our plans to play a historic friendship basketball game between North Korea and the US as well as ways to develop their basketball team.

"I held their baby Ju-ae and spoke with Ms Ri [Sol-Ju, Kim's wife] as well. He's a good dad and has a beautiful family. Kim told me, 'I'll see you in December.'"

Upon his return to the US, Rodman pledged to tell America "very good things" about North Korea. The former basketball player said the North Korean leader "wants to change things around the world".

Rodman told The Guardian he plans to organise a basketball game between American and Korean teams.

He added: "Kim is a great guy, he loves basketball, and he's interested in building trust and understanding through sport and cultural exchanges. I know in time Americans will see I'm just trying to help us all get along and see eye to eye through basketball and with my friendship with Kim I know this will happen."

Kim Jong-un is the third member of his family to rule North Korea and is believed to be 30 years old. He was effectively anointed as his father's successor in 2010, despite the fact he is the third son.

Given the traditional nature of North Korean society, it is unlikely that Ju-ae would succeed her father, although female relatives of Kim, such as his aunt, occupy key positions in government.
