A newly-opened exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam shows the famously tortured artist's working methods right down to his paints, brushes and other tools.

A total of 145 paintings and sketches are on display at the gallery - almost double the museum's usual collection.

But while art historians have long said the artist's work was spontaneous and the result of a tortured soul, it now seems that Van Gogh may have actually planned each piece of art very carefully.
