Over ten thousand applications have been submitted to become astronauts on a planned mission to Mars in 2023.

The 75 million mile, seven month journey, only comes with a one-way ticket but the no returns policy is not putting people off.

One applicant to the Mars One Project said: "I want to an inspiration for people on earth and to remind them how far we have come, and how far we will go".
