2016 Olympics arena forced to close due to roof damage
The arena scheduled to host the athletics events at the 2016 Olympics in Rio has been forced to close due to structural damage to the roof.
Rio de Janeiro's Joao Havelange stadium was completed less than six years ago, and is currently the city's main soccer venue while the Maracana is rebuilt for this year's Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, said he decided to shut the stadium after he was informed the roof had structural damage that put spectators at risk.
