Former X Factor winner Shayne Ward was "devastated" as he became the latest celebrity to be voted off Dancing on Ice on Sunday night after a "skate-off that should never have been".

The singer, who more recently starred in West End musical Rock of Ages, said he was "devastated" that his ice-dancing journey had come to an end.

With his partner Maria Filippov, Ward faced a skate-off against former Eastenders actor Matt Lapinskas and his partner Brianne Delcourt after finding themselves in the bottom two positions after the judges' scores were combined with viewers' votes.

Despite Lapinskas stumbling in his performance, the judges voted for him to stay, and the actor was unable to express his emotions as he wept on the ice-rink.

After the dance, his partner said: "He got right back up and went into a lift."

Mentor Christopher Dean also commended him, adding: "You recovered fantastically well."

His recovery was enough to save him and so Ward was dumped out of the competition, with head judge Robin Cousins saying the two dances "could not compare".

Judge Karen Barber found the decision difficult and said: "Well, this is a skate-off that should never have been."

Paying tribute to his fellow celebrities and ice dancers, the star said: "Thank you so much, you've been an amazing bunch."

Earlier in the evening Ward scored 23.5 out of a possible 40 while Lapinskas scored 28 - neither men were at the bottom of the scoreboard.

After his first dance, Cousins told Ward he was "almost more comfortable" on his own on the ice than when he was dancing with his partner.

Former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts was tickled pink by Ward's fetching costume.

"I never thought I'd be turned on by a man in a pink bedazzled shirt but I think that might have happened tonight," she said.

Watch Matt Lapinskas and his partner Brianne Delcourt perform in the skate-off:

Lapinskas was praised for putting on a performance that was "unlike anything we've ever seen on the show", according to Gardiner.

Dressed as an evil swan, complete with black shiny feathers, Lapinskas was told his performance was "amazing".

Roberts said: "Oh drama baby, yeah! I was amazed and you give me goosebumps."
